It seems like every year I fail at it. This year will be different. Why is this the case?

I pledged on Goodreads to read 10 books this year. This is a website where you can connect with other book lovers, share books, rate books etc. This reading challenge just made sense to me. I think I learned about it on Facebook through one of my friend's posts. It's very motivating to see my friends as well as other people in this community that are committed to reading.

I'm currently reading my 9th book of the year. Well on my way to accomplishing my goal. I've learned the following:

-Find other people who are trying to accomplish the same goal and motivate each other

-Social media helps keep you committed

-Don't try to accomplish too many goals at once

Two Year Anniversary in Minnesota

Two years ago, Matt and I moved to Minnesota. Here are just some of the things I can recall below.

We were planning our wedding. We have now been married for about ten months

Matt just started his new role. Now he's in another position

I didn't have a job when we moved to Minnesota. I've been working now for about two years

Since we've moved here, we have ran three half marathons and a full marathon

Matt turned 30 right after we moved here, and I just recently turned 30

As for the picture, it was taken on August 1st so it seemed fitting. : )

Paris, give me a kiss!

This picture brings back such great memories of my time studying abroad. My friends and I took a trip to Paris. We happened to be in Paris for Thanksgiving of 2004. Hard to believe that it has been almost seven years since this very picture was taken.

Two of my friends are traveling to Europe this week, and they happen to be going to Paris as one of their destinations. I definitely recommended this spot. I learned so much about different cultures as well as the American culture while I saw the world. My advice is to travel while you still have the chance. You'll never forget what you learn along the way. Maybe you can pose by the spinning lips too someday soon.

It's been a long time.

It's been a very long time since I've had a post. He explained to me over the phone that our wedding bands were in at Jared. I was excited until I heard that the two wedding bands were mine. One in a size 5 and the other in a size 8.

Well, Matt didn't order the same wedding band as mine. It was just crazy. The customer service we've received has been anything but good. They made such a big deal about Matt's ring. We were told there was a possibility that they wouldn't be able to make it in his size. Well, now we know it's because they were trying to make a woman's ring in a man's size.

Anyway, we had all of the paperwork verifying that they had made a mistake. Matt's going to get the ring he ordered in two weeks. Tomorrow we'll find out what we'll get in return for Jared's repeatedly bad customer service. I guess if we get the rings we want in the end, everything will be fine. We just know this situation could have been prevented had they paid a little more attention to what they were doing. It's a good thing our wedding isn't less than two weeks away.

August 1st!

The first day of August is officially here. Exactly a year ago today, Matt and I were driving up to Minneapolis from Cincinnati. We rolled into Minneapolis pretty late on August 1st. We were pretty much ready for bed by the time we arrived at Clint and April's house.

Wow, it's already been one year! In some ways I can believe it but it's still crazy how all of a sudden it's the same time of year again. We hadn't closed on our house yet. We were living out of our suitcases.

Additionally, I knew I had to find a job before I could really focus more on wedding planning. I worked as hard as I could to network, looked at job postings etc. I also spent a lot of time at the nearby Caribou Coffees and Starbucks locations. Now, it's crazy to think I'll be at my job a full year in October.

We had so much time until our wedding last year. It was so far off into the distance. Now, it's only 88 days away. Well, I must say it's been an exciting journey so far. We've faced challenges and obstacles along the way, but Matt and I are making a home for ourselves in Minneapolis. Well, it's time for me to get back to wedding planning.

The End of July is Here!

This time last year, Matt and I were getting ready to move from Cincinnati to Minneapolis. Our house in Cincinnati looked so strange and empty. A year ago, I was excited and anxious for the new journey. In some ways it feels like a year but it also feels like it can't possibly be August tomorrow.

I remember saying goodbye to my friend Wendy who had stopped over in the morning of August 1st before Matt and I hit the road.

I left Cincinnati not knowing what to really expect. We hadn't closed on our new house yet, but we were happy that we would be staying with friends for two weeks. I knew I'd be starting my job hunt in full force.

I do know a thing or two about change. Besides knowing a few people in Minneapolis, everything else was brand new to me. I knew it would be a huge adjustment living in a new city, meeting new people, getting used to new roads etc., but I knew that I'd figure everything out eventually. Sometimes I pushed myself too hard in the beginning, but I managed to find a great job in a very short period of time. I've also met some really great people.

Happy Social Media Day!

Wow, I guess there's a holiday for every day of the year now, eh? Well, if there isn't it seems like it then. I find it kind of funny that today is Social Media Day. Think about it for a second. Tell your grandparents that it's Social Media Day, and they might just look at you like you are crazy. Well, that is of course if your grandparents aren't on Facebook, Twitter etc. I guess if they are well then they are celebrating with the rest of us.

Today I'll celebrate the fact that I can easily connect with friends and family all over the place. Regardless of where I move to or go, I'm never too far away. It's a great feeling to always be connected in one way or another.

Do you want to be involved in Social Media Day? One year ago today, I remember hearing that Michael Jackson had died. I originally heard that he went to the hospital on TMZ's twitter page. I was at an Ad2 advertising event at a Studio in Cincinnati, and one of my friend's called me to tell me the news. I think back, and a lot has changed in a year. I live in a different state, and I have a different job.

Change is a good thing but sometimes you don't realize how much change has happened until an event causes time to stand still.

Time is flying!

I haven't written a blog post in ages, so I figured it's time. I can't believe it's almost June!

Wedding planning is going well, and my fiancé and I are running a half marathon next Sunday. I didn't think that spring would be here so quickly, but I'm definitely not complaining about it. It's so nice here in Minnesota.

I know the next few months are going to go by even faster so it's time to really focus on all of the wedding plans that still need to be done. Here are a few things we still need to work on for the wedding.

Invitations

Maps

List of things to do in Bloomington, Indiana

Find out about taking pictures in Assembly Hall (Have to wait until July to follow up)

Book our rental car

Additionally, I really want to spend more time on The Knot. One of my friend's thinks I'd be a great wedding planner. I'm just really enjoying the planning although if we didn't have as much time to plan as we have had I'd probably be pretty stressed.

Looking at wedding resources or want to see what I'm up? Check out my tumblr account. It's kind of like a scrapbooking blog. I've never lost a phone before. (Well, I can't remember losing a phone so I'll just go with it.) I was out of town most of last week, and I lost my iPhone on Wednesday, April 21st. Yes, I lost it. I'm not exactly sure what happened to it but it seems to be gone for good. I was so mad at myself. How could I lose it? It was an expensive present I received from my mom about a year ago. Yes, I didn't even make it a year. Fortunately, it didn't cost $600 to replace it since I've had it for a little while. I just needed to extend my contract and it wasn't too bad to replace it. Also, I was able to retrieve a lot on it because I had synced it back in December. Here's what I learned.

Material possessions can always be replaced

Mistakes happen and you move on

Mobile Me is a necessary! (If I ever lose my phone again I can track it. I can also wipe my iPhone and save all of the photos etc. saved on it

Maybe I still feel like I don't deserve another iPhone, but I learned some valuable lessons.

2010, you'll be remembered

There are a lot of things that have happened or will happen this year. How can that be? Fear is all around us. We have a running dialog in our own thoughts that can be used for good or for evil.

Fear as a friend
Pushes you to do what needs to be done such as finding a job because you need money

Fear as a foe
Thinking you are too old to use or understand social media so you don't

Fear seems to be such a constant negative weight that people can't seem to shake. I decided it was time to ask the following questions:

Why do we have so much fear and more importantly why do adults have so much more fear than children?

My answer is the following: We are afraid to fail so we have fear.

I decided that we need to reprogram ourselves. Maybe adults could learn new things easier if we just decided that failure IS an option. If we weren't so afraid that we would fail at something, we might each as individuals learn a whole lot more.

What do you think?

P.S.-- Being criticized shouldn't be a barrier to try new things. If people are going to criticize you at least you are trying. It's easier to analyze what other people are doing when you aren't doing anything at all.

2010 is here. It's crazy how things have changed in a year. Let me see what I can think of off the top of my head. Over a year ago I was...

Living in Cincinnati, Ohio

Working at WonderGroup

President of Ad2

Planning the Mid Year Retreat in Cincinnati for Ad2

Driving to North Carolina for Thanksgiving

Committed myself to working out

Now, I'm living in a new city, working at a new job in a new industry, and I'm planning my wedding. I definitely committed myself to working out. I'm in great shape, and I need to set some realistic goals for next year. Here are some of the things I haven't managed to work on in the last few years.

Read more (Need to make this happen. I wasn't sure what to expect, and I was definitely surprised by one of the contestants, and her situation.

Unfortunately, this contestant lost her whole family in a terrible car accident. I know this show is always filled with emotion, but I really had to think about this situation and how horrible it would be for anyone to be in her shoes. It also reminded me that it's important to put your life into context. If you don't, you might just worry about things that aren't really priorities.

Right now I live in a new city, I'm meeting new people and sometimes it's just exhausting. After watching that episode of Biggest Loser last night, I realized it's not so bad to be in my shoes right now. I also realize how important it is from a marketing/advertising perspective that it's all about how you communicate your ideas and if the people around you understand it in the appropriate context. Put your idea in the wrong context and all of a sudden it doesn't come across the right way.

Moved to the "Big North"

Before I start back into the job hunt, I wanted to write a few words about my move to Minneapolis, Minnesota. I told myself at the start of this year that I was going to do the following:

-Work out regularly
-Read one book a month
-Not freak out about wedding plans
-Create blog and write frequently

Well, I've been working out on a regular basis, and I'm not freaking out about wedding plans, but I've already managed to slip up on reading one book a month, and I haven't been posting very many blog entries.

Why can't I get my act together? Well, I know the answer. I'm just not making it a priority. Working out is important to me and it makes me feel focused and energetic so I do it.

I'm determined to finish the book I'm reading before Wednesday and this is my second blog post in a row. I'm not going to consider this a habit, though it's a start.

It will be a habit once I don't need to think about it anymore. I'm just going to take it one day at a time.

Criticism, get used to it. It's good for you.

I'm reading a very interesting book right now, Basic Black by Cathie Black.

It really has me thinking about criticism and how best to deal with it.

Think about these questions:

-When someone gives you criticism, how do you deal with it?
-What's the worst thing that can happen if someone tells you something you don't want to hear?
-Do we spend more time worrying about being criticized than we do actually living our lives?

I think that there is much to be learned from positive as well as negative criticism. Basically, we can build walls around ourselves and try to act like everything we do as individuals is perfect but it isn't a reality. The more you defend yourself and shun criticism, the less likely you are to learn anything new about yourself.

I challenge you to listen the next time someone gives you a little criticism. I'll do the same regardless of whether it's positive or negative.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://allitracy.blogspot.com/2009/03/criticism-get-used-to-it-its-good-for.html' title='Criticism, get used to it. What am I committed to? Well, I think that I commit myself to a few different things.

Here's my list:

My fiance

My job

Ad2

Working out/Wii Fit

Twitter (Added this last minute but I'm on there pretty much every day)

I guess I could add more to this list if I wanted to, but I think it's important to realize why you do what you do. It's so easy to say "I'm so busy" or I just can't juggle one additional thing. I think about the people in my life and what I do on a daily basis. I make time or sacrifice my time for the things in my life I enjoy and feel passionate about. I was just thinking today how much time I spend on Ad2 activities. Yes, it takes up a majority of my time, but I love it. I am learning so much about how to be a leader as well as how to give back to the local advertising industry by offering resources to young professionals.

As for Wii Fit, I can't get enough of it. I've used it for 9 weeks straight as of yesterday. I'm about to hit my 3 month anniversary of working out every day on March 6th. Working out makes me feel good, wakes me up in the morning and gives me that sense of accomplishment before I even leave to go to work. Additionally, Twitter helps me feel connected and also offers me the opportunity to share information and what's currently happening in my life.

Anyway, I challenge you to take a look at how you spend your time. Do you enjoy what you do? More importantly, do you do something long enough to enjoy it?

I do enjoy blogging, but I obviously don't enjoy it as much as Ad2, Wii Fit or Twitter. I think it's time for me to change my tune. I would like to maybe have one person follow my blog someday. I know the more I post the better I'll get. It's all about participation. It wasn't easy when I started waking up in the morning to work out. Now, it's a habit.

Are You Scared?

Sometimes I think being a little scared is a good thing because it means you are challenging yourself beyond your comfort zone. My fiance doesn't understand it, but I don't expect him to understand it. I do know that I've always enjoyed going to Starbucks to read or just to think. I'm motivated by the energy of others. For some reason the background noises help me concentrate. I'm an extroverted person for the most part but sometimes I just want to chill. I guess no matter where I go, I feel better knowing I'm connected to the outside world.

Whether I make a phone call, send a text, express myself on twitter or facebook, I have a world out their to communicate with in ways that I never would have imagined as a child. My family and friends are scattered all over the country but social media makes it work for me. Recently, I set up twitter for my mom and it's really nice to talk to her this way. My mom is open to learning new things which is fantastic. Knowing we can stay in touch without always having to call each other is so amazing.

What a Book

I just finished reading the book Outliers, by Malcolm Gladwell, and it is truly a great read.
I think I liked it so much for the following reasons:

Success doesn't just happen out of no where but from opportunities, cultural legacies, hard work etc.

You can change your cultural legacy if you understand it

Parents are so very vital to the growth of their children and when they help their children learn outside of the classroom, they help them succeed

The garment industry in NYC is very much a part of my cultural legacy with my great grandfather who worked as a tailor and did embroidery with my great grandmother's help

I can relate so much to this book. I've worked really hard my whole life to succeed. This book has opened my eyes to some of the reasons why I feel the way I do about learning. I was raised to truly value education. I'm feeling happy today for many reasons. I think the Inauguration was such an uplifting event. I know that our country has a long way to go, but I think it's important to have a positive spirit. Without one, we might as well just stick our heads in the sand. Regardless of your political affiliations, I think it's so exciting to be here right now. Remember, we are all responsible for doing our part to make America prosper.

Looking Back on 2008

A lot happened in 2008, and I expect 2009 to be filled with just as much excitement.

Before I am " So Fine in 09", here is what was "Great in 08".

I started my career at WonderGroup on January 2nd of 2008

Started training for the Flying Pig Half Marathon in January

Helped plan a successful Career Day for Ad Club Cincinnati in February

Attended my first ADDY award show hosted by WonderGroup in February

Ran my first half marathon in under 2 hours in May

Became president of Ad2 Cincinnati on my birthday, July 1st

Won the bid to host Ad2's Annual Mid Year Retreat in Cincinnati in July

Planned the Mid Year Retreat from July through November

Went white water rafting in West Virginia for the first time in August

My fiance proposed on November 22, 2008

Started my habit to work out in the morning on Dec 6th and haven't broken it yet

That's all I have for now.

Goodreads

Ok, so I'm trying to read more in the New Year. I'm not going to talk about it anymore. So, I'm doing it. I work with a lot of people who inspire me to try new things. This is going to be a short post, but I needed to write one.

There's really only one thing I want to say. Social media is great. What better way to accomplish your goals by sharing them with your network! I've been working in the morning for almost 3 weeks now. Ever morning I proudly post on my Twitterthe countdown to the 3 weeks. After 3 weeks, it will be a habit. I use Twitter to help me stay accountable for the goal I'm trying to achieve. Just watch out. I haven't even written my new year's resolutions list.

You better believe Twitter and blogging is going to make me actually accomplish my resolutions this year.
